Walking on Water
When Jesus was finished praying, He came to the disciples who were in the boat: walking on water. It is difficult for us to understand but Peter walked on the water also.

22. “John recorded the reason why Jesus was in such a hurry to dismiss the crowd and send the disciples back in the boat: The crowed wanted to make Jesus King (John 6:14-15).” (Wiersbe, Warren W, The Bible Exposition Commentary New Testament Volume 1 Matthew-Galatians. [Colorado Springs: David C Cook, 2004], 51)
23. “He needs to be alone for prayer.” (Blomberg, Craig L., The New American Commentary, Volume 22, Matthew. [Nashville: Broadman Press], 234)
“He used this solitude for conversation with his Father. This was a frequent practice for Jesus, but, because he was so popular and so much in demand, privacy was rare for him. Jesus must have had to work hard at protecting time to pray.” [Max Anders and Stuart K. Weber (2012). HNTC Vol. 01: Matthew. B&H Publishing Group. Retrieved from https://read.lifeway.com]
Do we (you and me) protect our time for prayer?
Winds
“This entire scene is a dramatic picture of the church and the Lord today. God’s people are on the sea, in the midst of a storm. Yet Jesus Christ is in heaven ‘making intercession for us’ (Romans 8:34).” (Wiersbe, 51)
(Mark 6:48; Hebrews 4:14-16)
24. The disciples “were fighting contrary winds, which implies they were having to row. Not only were they having to row into the wind, but they were also being buffeted by high waves.” [Max Anders and Stuart K. Weber (2012). HNTC Vol. 01: Matthew. B&H Publishing Group. Retrieved from https://read.lifeway.com]
25. It was “in the dark hours before dawn—after the disciples had battled the waves and Jesus had prayed through the night—that Jesus decided it was time to catch up with his disciples by walking across the tossing sea.” [Max Anders and Stuart K. Weber (2012). HNTC Vol. 01: Matthew. B&H Publishing Group. Retrieved from https://read.lifeway.com]
26. “It’s a ghost! They could not imagine anyone or anything with physical form walking across water. And they cried out in fear.” [Max Anders and Stuart K. Weber (2012). HNTC Vol. 01: Matthew. B&H Publishing Group. Retrieved from https://read.lifeway.com]
I think I would be afraid also. Image seeing someone walking across the water!
27. Immediately Jesus “reassured them that He was no ghost!” (McGee, J. Vernon, Thru the Bible: Volume IV. [Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1983], 85)
“This experience of the disciples in the storm can be an encouragement to us when we go through the storms of life.” (Wiersbe, 51)
Peter
28. “Before we criticize Peter for sinking, let’s honor him for his magnificent demonstration of faith. Anybody can sit in the boat and watch. But it takes a person of real faith to leave the boat and walk on the water.” (Wiersbe, 52.
29. “My Bible says that Peter walked on the water to go to Jesus. This is not failure!” (McGee, 85)
Read Matthew 14:29 in several translations.
30. Have you ever looked out your window or door during a storm and saw the wind? Think about Peter looking around him at the winds and waves. How would you feel?
I think I would be screaming “Lord, save me.” [KJV]
“You and I need to pray like that.” (McGee, 85)
31. Ever heard the expression “Keep your Eyes on Jesus?”
“Peter’s problem was that he took his eyes off Jesus and looked at the waves rolling we need to keep our eyes on the Lord Jesus Christ.” (McGee, 85)
KJV reads “O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?”
Do we doubt?
32. As soon as Jesus took his hand they came into the boat. The wind ceased. [KJV]
33. The disciples realized of a truth thou art the Son of God. [KJV].
Gennesaret
34. Suddenly, they landed in Gennesaret.
35. Jesus was recognized, and the sick were brought to Him.
36.” They begged him to let them touch his cloak. This touch brought healing to all who touched him.” [Max Anders and Stuart K. Weber (2012). HNTC Vol. 01: Matthew. B&H Publishing Group. Retrieved from https://read.lifeway.com]
And as many as touched were made perfectly whole. [KJV]
