Matthew 21:18-22

18-19. “Jesus decided to eat figs for breakfast when he saw a fig tree growing by the road. Jesus assumed the tree had fruit when he saw its leaves. But the leaves had sent a false message. There was no fruit. The tree’s promise was empty.” [Max Anders and Stuart K. Weber (2012). HNTC Vol. 01: Matthew. B&H Publishing Group. Retrieved from https://read.lifeway.com]

“We can say with confidence that when our Lord came into the world, there was no fruit evidenced by the nation of Israel. There were only the outward leaves of a ritualistic, lifeless religion.” (McGee, J. Vernon, Thru the Bible: Volume IV. [Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1983], 112)

“Unless Israel repents, like the fig tree it will perish.” (Blomberg, Craig L., The New American Commentary, Volume 22, Matthew. [Nashville: Broadman Press], 318)

Cursed

20. “To them this was an amazing thing.” (McGee, 112)

21. “They marvel that the fig tree was cursed, and He tells them that their problem is that they do not have faith to believe that God can move in such a miraculous way.” (McGee, 112)

“This enacted parable further teaches Jesus’ disciples that adequate faith would enable them to cast even ‘this mountain’ into the sea.” (Blomberg, 318)

22. “Jesus used this event to teach His disciple a practical lesson about faith and prayer. The temple was supposed to be a ‘house of prayer,’ and the nation was to be a believing people.” (Wiersbe, Warren W, The Bible Exposition Commentary New Testament Volume 1 Matthew-Galatians. [Colorado Springs: David C Cook, 2004], 77)

“‘Whatever you ask for’ may well still refer to whatever the disciples request concerning the replacement of the Jewish cult with the new covenant Jesus is inaugurating.” (Blomberg, 319)
